Gary Wilkerson is a tenured professor who has degrees from Eastern Kentucky University, the University of Arizona, and the University of Kentucky. He has had a wide variety of professional experiences over a period of more than 30 years, which have included prevention and treatment of sports injuries among high school, college, and Olympic athletes, functioning as a physician extender in a multi-specialty medical practice, co-founding a private practice sports rehabilitation clinic, and providing corporate health management services. His primary research interests and expertise relate to ankle biomechanics and predictive modeling of lower extremity injury risk. His work has been published in Journal of Athletic Training, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Foot & Ankle International, Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Physician and Sportsmedicine, Journal of Sport Rehabilitation, and Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Athletic Therapy and Training, he has received the designation of Fellow of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, and he is a member of the Southeast Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame.

Dr. Colston joined the UTC faculty in 1999, as an assistant professor in the Post-Professional Athletic Training Program.  Dr. Colston was appointed as the Program Director of the Professional Graduate Athletic Training Education Program (GATEP) at its inception in 2001. She has led the GATEP through two successful accreditations, with the most recent (2009) resulting in zero non-compliance issues for a maximum 10-year accreditation cycle. Dr. Colston has been a recipient of the UTC Student Government Most Outstanding Professor Award, an NATA Service Award, and was recently promoted to full professor.  Her research focuses on lumbar spine injury prevention as well as the ethical and professional aspects of athletic training.  She is an active participant in Athletes in Action, including a trip to Guatemala and participation in monthly videoconferences with orthopedic surgeons for the Professional Soccer League in Guatemala City, Guatemala.  Faith, family and friends, and students are her highest priorities and are therefore her favorite pastimes. She is married to Jon, who is a musician and business owner and they have a son, Alexander.

Scott joined the UTC faculty in 2006 as a lecturer/instructor for the Graduate Athletic Training Education Program.  He also coordinates the GATP Recruiting efforts.  Scott has been certified for 25+ years and brings a wealth knowledge and experience to the classroom.  He has worked with athletes at all levels of competition from youth sports to the elite Olympic level athletes.  The highlight of Scott's career came in 2001 as the Assistant Athletic Trainer for football at the University of Miami when they won the Rose Bowl and the BCS National Championship.  Scott is presently pursuing his PhD from UTC.  His research interests involve concussions, therapeutic exercise and clinical prediction rules and concussions.  He is married to Jana and has two beautiful children, Patrick (17) and Allison (16).

Brendon McDermott is an assistant professor and clinical coordinator in the Entry-Level Graduate Athletic Training Education Program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from Northeastern University and his Master’s degree in Kinesiology from Indiana University. McDermott then worked for four years at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, PA as an assistant clinical professor and assistant Athletic Trainer. He received his PhD from the University of Connecticut studying exercise science with a research focus on thermal physiology, hydration, and exertional heat stroke. His dissertation was titled “Effect of the Mode of Rehydration on Recovery from Exercise Dehydration: Cardiovascular, Hormonal, and Medical Considerations.” McDermott is currently a test item writer for the Board of Certification and a reviewer for multiple professional journals, including the Journal of Athletic Training. He volunteers yearly at the Marine Corps and Boston Marathon’s. In 2010, Dr. McDermott was named to the medical and science advisory board for the Korey Stringer Institute. In his free time, he enjoys distance running and spending time with his wife Jamie and their son Aidan.

 

Richard G. Alvarez, MD, Professor and Chair

Dr. Richard Alvarez is Co-Medical Director of the UTC Graduate Athletic Training Education Program.   Dr. Alvarez is a board certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the foot and ankle.  After graduating from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Dr. Alvarez did his residency at Tulane University, an internship at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, TN and a fellowship at the University of Vermont.  Dr. Alvarez is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the American Medical Association, the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society.

 

 

Dr. J. Mack Worthington, MD

Dr. Mack Worthington is Co-Medical Director of the UTC Graduate Athletic Training Education Program. 

After serving for two years with the United States Air Force at the Eglin AFB Regional Hospital he joined the faculty of the Department of Family Medicine at the University Of Tennessee College Of Medicine, Memphis.  There he was a strong supporter of medical students and residents where he served in various roles including Program Director, Vice Chair of the Department for Academic Affairs, and acting Chair. He was Chief of Family Practice at Baptist Memorial Hospital.

He moved to Chattanooga to found the Department of Family Medicine and the Family Medicine Residency Program.  A past president of the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians Dr. Worthington is currently president of the Tennessee Medical Association and has held national positions with the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, and the American Medical Association.

In his years prior to medical school, Dr. Worthington worked on his family farm, taught college level mathematics, and pursued a career in aeronautical engineering.  A former pilot himself, he also loves to play the trombone, which he does regularly for his church ensemble.  “Family Medicine not only gives you an opportunity to care for your patients but also an opportunity to serve your profession and your community”
