Food, Glorious Food!

One way or another, twenty-first century Americans seem to be obsessed with food. From Supersize Me and Fast Food Nation to the “foodies” who worship celebrity chefs to the local food movement, these days it’s difficult to avoid hearing about what and how we eat. The fact is that food is so necessary to survival that we are often more concerned about feeding ourselves than understanding the many roles it plays in our lives, our economy, and our environment. In this class, students will have an opportunity to read and think about the historical attitudes toward food and its place in our economy, our health, and our own family traditions. In addition to reading books and essays about these aspects of food, we’ll also explore some films and television programs, and we’ll take at least one field trip to a local food producer.

This course is tentatively set to be offered on Tuesdays at 3:05 p.m.

Note: Please check the schedule of classes for the most up-to-date information about meeting times, locations, and availability.
