Undergraduate Programs

The English department offers undergraduate programs of study designed to prepare students for careers in fields such as:

  • advertising
  • creative writing
  • education
  • journalism
  • law
  • professional writing
  • public relations
  • publishing
...and many other fields where mastery of language, rhetoric, and critical analysis is important. Of course, we also prepare our students for further study in a wide variety of graduate and professional schools.

The English curriculum for undergraduate majors leads to the following baccalaureate degrees:

B.A. in English and American Language and Literature: Writing

The Department also offers undergraduate minor concentrations in the following areas:

English Major: B.A. in English and American Language and Literature

NOTE: The program described below outlines requirements for English majors who operate under the UTC Undergraduate Catalog 2003-2004 or later. English majors operating under older editions of the Undergraduate Catalog should consult the previous program requirements.

English Major and Related Courses:

The English major requires a minimum of 39 hours in addition to General Education and University Graduation requirements, to include at least 12 hours at the 200 level and at least 27 hours at the 300-400 levels. The required 200-level courses must be completed within the first 21 hours of major course work. Special Topics seminars have a prerequisite of 27 hours of English coursework above the 100 level. Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average in all English coursework, excluding general education Rhetoric and Composition courses. The following table outlines required courses:

200 Level (12 hours minimum; to be completed within first 21 hours of major course work)

English 201 - Introduction to Literary Analysis 3 hours
English 202 - Introduction to Rhetorical Analysis 3 hours
English 205 - Survey of British Literature 3 hours
English 206 - Survey of American Literature 3 hours

300-400 Level (27 hours minimum)

English 307 - Shakespeare 3 hours
English 361 - History of the English Language 3 hours
One of the following Special Topics seminars:

English Major: B.A. in English and American Language and Literature: Writing

The Department of English offers a concentration in writing within the English major. To earn this concentration, a student must complete the major in English (39 hours) including English 201, 202, 205, 206, 307, 361, and 446r or 447r. At least 21 hours of major coursework in English must be at the 300-400 levels. At least 12 hours of major coursework must be chosen from the following writing courses: English 270, 276, 277, 278, 279, 300, 370, 375r, 376r, 410, 446r, 447r, 471r, 473, 479r, 495r. Communication 230 and 363 may be used to satisfy coursework requirements in the writing concentration. The following table outlines the required courses:
