Pre-2003 English Major:
B.A. in English and American Language and Literature

NOTE: The program described below outlines requirements for English majors who operate under the UTC Undergraduate Catalog 2002-2003 or earlier. English majors operating under more recent editions of the Undergraduate Catalog should consult the current program requirements.

General Education:

(see full Undergraduate Catalog for list of approved courses):

  • Rhetoric and Composition: English 121, 122 (6 hours);
  • Mathematics: One approved mathematics course (3 hours);
  • Statistics: One approved statistics course (3 hours) ;
  • Natural Sciences: two approved natural sciences cources, at least one containing a laboratory component (7-8 hours);
  • Humanities and Fine Arts: Two approved humanities and fine arts courses, one from fine arts and one from either catagory (6 hours);
  • Cultures and Civilizations: Option (a) Western Humanites I and II and Nonwestern Cultrues and Civilizations, OR Option (b) World Civilization I, II, and III (9 hours total);
  • Behavioral and Social Sciences: Two approved behavioral or social science courses in two different disciplines (6 hours);

University Graduation Requirements:

  • Intensive Writing: One approved course in intensive writing (3 hours)
  • Oral Communication: One approved course in orl communication (3 hours)
  • Computer Literacy: One approved course in computer literacy, or pass on approved computer literacy examination (0-4 hours)
  • Physical Education: Exercise Science, Health and Leisure Studies 021 plus one additional semester exercise science activity course (2 hours total)
  • Foreign language through second college year;
  • Completion of a Minor with a minimum 2.0 grade point average

English Major and Related Courses:

  • 39 hours English in addition to general education requirements including: English 203; 207; 211 and 212; 213 and 214; 361; at least one course in the novel at the 300 or 400 level;
  • At least 9 of the remaining hours must be in 300- and 400- level courses, with one course in English literature before 1800;
  • 12 hours additional in supporting courses beyond the General Education requirements, to be chosen in conjunction with an academic advisor;
  • 2.0 average in all English courses (excluding general education Category A courses).
  • Minimum of 30 hours of 300 and 400 level courses
  • Electives to complete 128 hours

English Major: B.A. in Writing

The Department of English offers a concentration in writing within the English major. To take a concentration in writing a student must complete the major in English including at least 12 hours from the following courses, no more than two courses on the 200 level and at least one at the 400 level: English 270, 277, 278, 279, 300, 370, 375r, 376r, 410, 471r, 473, 479r, 495r when topic is appropriate, Communication 230, 363.


English Minors

English Minor: Literature
21 hours including 133, 203, 207, one (1) from English 204, 211, 212, 213, 214 and three (3) from 300-400 level literature courses with one (1) course before 1800, and one (1) course after 1800 in American or English literature, and one (1) elective 300-400 level in literature or writing to be chosen in conjunction with an academic advisor.

English Minor: Writing
21 hours, including 15 hours in writing courses and 6 hours elective at the 300 level or above--all to be chosen in conjunction with an academic advisor.

The 15 hours may be achieved in any combination of professional and creative courses. The six (6) hours may be in writing or literature courses.

Professional Writing Courses: 277 or 278, 279, 300, 410, 471r
Creative Writing Courses (fiction or poetry): 270, 375r, 376r, 471r.

At least 9 hours must be at the 300 level or above.
