Gas vs. Hydrogen

One gallon (gal) of gasoline contains approximately the same amount of energy as one kilogram (kg) of hydrogen.

A typical internal combustion engine (ICE) gets 27 mpg. When hydrogen is used in an ICE the efficiency drops to 24 miles per kilogram (mpkg). The price equivalence of the two fuels can be compared by the ratio of mpkg of hydrogen to mpg of gasoline as shown below.

If the hydrogen were to be used in fuel cell (FC) vehicles, the average FC vehicle is expected to get approximately 65 mpkg. The price equivalence a FC vehicle is shown below.
