J. Ronald Bailey

Dr. Bailey earned bachelors and masterís degrees in
engineering from North Carolina
where he was inducted into the honorary societies of Pi Tau Sigma, Tau Beta Pi,
and Phi Kappi Phi.† He earned a Ph.D.
from the Institute for Sound and Vibration Research at the University of
Southampton, England.† Dr. Baileyís
research interests have included vibrations, acoustics, robotics, machine
vision, statistical process control, and computer integrated manufacturing.
Dr. Bailey was a member of the faculty at N.C. State University for ten years where he taught
graduate and undergraduate courses, served as principal investigator for
several research.† Supervised Ph.D., M.S.
students and published numerous technical papers.† Dr. Bailey joined the IBM Corporation in Boca Raton, Florida
in 1980, where he held a number of engineering and management positions, each
with increasing responsibility, culminating in the position of product manager
for the Industrial Sector Divisionís Boca Raton Development Laboratory.† After twelve years with IBM, Dr. Bailey
joined the University of Texas at Arlington for
one year as Head of the Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering before being
appointed Dean of the College of Engineering, a position he held for three years until
he was named Vice President with responsibility for opening a new campus for
the city of Fort Worth.† Immediately prior to joining UT Chattanooga,
Dr. Bailey served four years as F.W. Olin Professor and Dean of the College of Engineering at Florida Institute of
Dr. Bailey is a licensed professional engineer.† At various times he has been a member of the
American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Acoustical Society of
America, the American Helicopter Society, the National Society of Professional
Engineers, and Kiwanis International. He is currently a member of the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Society for Engineering
Education.† He has served on the Board of
the Economic Development Commission of the Space Coast
and the Board of the National Space Club.
Dr. and Mrs. Bailey live in Chattanooga, Tennessee.† They have two adult daughters.
