About the UTC College of Engineering and Computer Science

In 1977, the UTC College of Engineering and Computer Science earned its initial accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for its Engineering program. It now has five engineering programs (Engineering, Chemical Engineering , Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering) and three computer science programs (Software Systems, Scientific Applications, and Information Security and Assurance) accredited under ABET.  Our new 28 million dollar facility was completed in 2003. The building features state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories that support all of our programs.

Engineering offers the following degrees:

The UTeachChattanooga Engineering program is innovative and the only such accredited program of its kind in the U.S. that provides students the opportunity to:

  • Obtain a B.S.E degree that emphasizes the general focus of engineering across disciplines or within a discipline.
  • Obtain eligibility for teacher licensure (for teaching Mathematics or Physics) in Tennessee and in those states that grant reciprocity privileges to graduates of institutions accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The College of Engineering and Computer Science also offers Masters degrees (MS) in Engineering, Computer Science, and Engineering Management. Our campus is also home to the UT SimCenter at Chattanooga now known as the SimCenter: National Center for Computational Engineering.  This Center houses the Ph.D program in Computational Engineering.  The mission of the center is to serve U.S. government and industry through integrated research and education in Computational Engineering.

The faculty and the students find the College of Engineering and Computer Science an welcoming environment to build their academic, tool and skill knowledge. Some highlights of the College include:

  • UTC Engineering and Computer Science students benefit from smaller classes and a low student to teacher ratio.
  • All engineering and computer science classes are taught by faculty with professional degrees.
  • The college has a Work Force Development Center that assists students to gain work experience and develop their interpersonal skills through internships and co-op opportunities with companies throughout Chattanooga and the surrounding areas.
  • Our students put their knowledge to the test by participating annually in national competitions such as Mini Baja, ChemE Car, Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe.
  • Our graduates can be found working for Fortune 500 companies, local, state and federal governing agencies.

In addition the college has:

  • Active student chapters that are affiliated with national Engineering and Computer Science professional societies and organizations
  • One of the fastest growing graduate programs at UTC
  • An award winning freshman design cours.
  • The nation’s first web-based controls laboratory (since1995)
  • The Center for Energy, Transportation, and the Environment (with focus on electric vehicles and alternative energy)
  • The Center for Information Security (one of 10 nationwide certified NSA and Homeland Security for education)
  • Competitive grant programs from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Energy (DOE)
  • Collaborative workforce development programs and advanced training in focus areas such as Smart Grid, Civil Materials Infrastructure, and Manufacturing
  • Faculty participating in several Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs reaching back to middle and high schools
  • Collaborative agreements with Chattanooga State Community College to ease transfer to UTC
