How much mathematics is required at UTC?
All students must complete at least one college level
mathematics course to meet general education requirements, and most students
must complete at least one more mathematics course for their majors. In addition, students who do not place into
college-level mathematics must take one and possibly two developmental courses.
What if I have already taken mathematics in college?
Students who have earned a grade of C or
better in certain prerequisite math courses are automatically eligible to take
the next math course in their sequence.
Those prerequisite courses include Math 105, Math 106, Math 131, Math
144, Math 145, and Math 151/152. Transfer credit for a “math
elective” does not exempt a student from taking the placement
test.
Students who have the proper transfer
credit are strongly urged to take the Mathematics Placement Test for advisement
purposes if it has been several years since the mathematics course was taken. Such students should discuss their situations
with a member of the Mathematics Department (423-425-4545).
What is the Mathematics Placement Test like?
The test consists of two parts: a 35-question arithmetic
test and a 25-question algebra test, each lasting 30 minutes. You are strongly urged to review for this
test particularly if you have not taken a math course in at least once
semester. The questions on the algebra
test are at a high school Algebra II level.

How do I arrange to take the Mathematics Placement Test?
The Admissions Office (423-425-4662) administers the
Mathematics Placement Test during the Freshman and Transfer Orientation
sessions. These dates/times are listed
in the information sent to students in regard to orientation.
For students who missed the test during
orientation, the Mathematics Department administers the Mathematics Placement
Test at various other times before and after each semester begins. Placement
Test Dates. No appointment is needed. The mathematics placement test is given in
room 205 in the Engineering, Mathematics, and
How do I obtain the results of my test?
Results of tests taken during an
orientation session are posted to RAP sheets and are available at the
advisement session during orientation.
Likewise, results of tests taken at other times are posted to RAP sheets
and are also available from the Mathematics Department (423-425-4545) by 1:00
pm the next working day following the test.
How do I interpret my placement level?
The Mathematics Placement Program places students into five
levels. The courses available at each level are as follows:
|

All UTC mathematics courses have
prerequisites that are strictly enforced. The prerequisite(s) for each
mathematics course is listed in the Schedule of Classes link
(Mathematics). All students (even
transient and graduate students) must demonstrate either the appropriate UTC
mathematics placement level or prerequisite course credit in order to enroll in
a UTC math class.
Can I retake the Mathematics Placement Test?
Students
take the placement test only once.
