Virginia Magnus, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Counseling Program.  Dr. Magnus received her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2005.  She holds a Master of Science in Counseling/School Counseling from Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toledo, Toledo Ohio. 

Dr. Magnus is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC-Texas), and a Certified Sports Counselor (CSC).  She is also a Consultant and School Specialist with the National Institute for Trauma & Loss in Children.  Dr. Magnus is a member of the American Counseling Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, American School Counseling Association, and the International Honor Society for Counseling, Chi Sigma Iota.  She currently serves as the Co-chair of the Youth, Families & Couples Committee, International Association of Addictions and Offender Counselors. 

Prior to coming to UTC, Dr. Magnus was a graduate assistant at UNCC.  In her role as a graduate assistant, Dr. Magnus worked as a group leader and assistant to faculty in the counseling program.  Additionally, she was a school counselor working specifically with children with special needs, students in grades K-12, and students in alternative schools.  She has also worked with adolescents in a residential substance abuse treatment facility and with female inmates.

Dr. Magnus has several years of volunteer experience.  She has served as a grief counselor for children and adolescents for Hospice in North Carolina and Chattanooga, Tennessee, and served as a patient visitor for Hospice in Texas. She has also volunteered as a Mentoring Mom for a hospital and served on the Taskforce for Domestic Violence in Indiana, and as an Alzheimer patient visitor and admissions advocate for a hospital in Ohio. Dr. Magnus’ research and professional interests include children and adolescents, grief and loss, alternative schools, addictions, crisis, and female offenders.
