Kristi Gibbs is an Assistant Professor of Counseling and Coordinator of the Counselor Education Unit. Dr. Gibbs received her Ph.D. in Counselor Education with a minor in Play Therapy from the University of New Orleans (UNO) in 2004. She holds a Master of Science in Counseling and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Dr. Gibbs is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Louisiana and Tennessee and a Registered Play Therapist. She is a member of the American Counseling Association, Tennessee Counseling Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and International Association for Play Therapy. Dr. Gibbs is past-president of the Tennessee Association of Counselor Education and Supervision.
Prior to coming to UTC, Dr. Gibbs worked as a counselor and clinical supervisor in an agency in New Orleans where her practice consisted primarily of counseling children. Dr. Gibbs has three years experience working in an inpatient psychiatric setting as an assessment counselor and two years in a residential substance abuse facility.
Dr. Gibbs’ research interests include counseling children, preparing students to counsel children, play therapy, and clinical supervision. Her dissertation was entitled “Counselor Educators’ Perceptions about the Process of Training Students to Counsel Children.”
