New course in documentary offered in fall '09

Dr. Kit Rushing will teach a cross-listed course in journalism history in the fall term. Dr. Rushing offers this description of the course:
HIST 499 003 History of U.S. Journalism TT 10:50 12:05
Journalism in the United States traces its beginnings to the colonial period. Current concepts of journalism ethics, the purpose of journalism in a free society, and professional responsibility have evolved from the colonial news sheet through the 19th century secession crisis and war, to the penny press of the Gilded Age, the muckrakers and news conglomerates of the 20th century, to the issues of convergence and the changing definition of news in the 21st century. The History of Journalism seminar seeks to develop a coherent and logical thread of development that places modern journalistic practices, values and forms into the context of U.S. history.
