RESEARCHERS PRESENT POSTERS AT THE STATE CAPITOL: The seventh annual Posters at the Capitol was held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in Nashville. There were 64 undergraduate presenters from Tennessee Board of Regents and University of Tennessee system universities presenting their work at the state capitol. Their posters were displayed in the hallway of Legislative Plaza and the students had a chance to discuss their research with general public. This year, there were three chemistry students (Ashley Cardenal, Jae Son, Miranda Trentle) from UTC. Thanks to Dr. Greg Grant for 32 Years of Service: Dr Grant will retire at the end of June after 32 years of teaching, research and service. During his career at UTC, Dr. Grant published numerous papers and worked with several students. His research dedication was honored by the American Chemical Society in 2010 with the ACS Award for Research at an Undergraduate Institution, sponsored by Research Corporation for Science Advancement. This national award recognizes the importance of research with undergraduates and is given to only one professor a year. Local High School Students Compete in Chemistry Olympiad: The Chattanooga Section of the American Chemical Society held the qualifying exams for seven outstanding local chemistry students at UTC. The students participating were the high scorers on the local exam, and now may become members of the U.S.NationalChemistry Olympiad team that will compete inthe 44th International Chemistry Olympiad in Washington D.C. UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH STUDENT WINS TRAVEL AWARD: Ashley Cardenal, an undergraduate chemistry major, has been award a travel grant by the American Chemical Society to attend the 243rd National ACS Meeting, to be held in San Diego, CA, March 25-29, 2012. Ashley has been performing undergraduate research with Dr. Jisook Kim for the last year and she will present her research, "Photoinduced-DNA cleavage activity of rhodium complexes" at the conference. PAM ROSS: Dr. Pam Ross, Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at UVA and 1987 UTC BA in Chemistry, met with chemistry majors for breakfast on Saturday, Nov. 19. Dr. Ross was in town to accept the UTC African American Alumni Achievement Award in Health. We are grateful to Dr. Ross for meeting with our majors and providing insight to the medical school application process and answering questions about emergency medicine. GROTE RENOVATIONS ALMOST COMPLETE: As the spring semester winds down, the renovations of Grote Hall are kicking into full swing. The department spent a week moving glassware and chemicals from the 4th floor to 3rd floor storage. This was followed by demolition of the 4th floor labs. Renovations to the 3rd floor are nearly done. Pictures of the demolition and the new labs on the third floor can be viewed here. DR. STEVE SYMES AWARDED $27,387 FOR 2ND YEAR OF GRANT: Dr. Symes was awarded $27,387 for the second year of a NASA grant titled "Chronological and Minearlogical Studies of Alteration Products in Martian Meteorites". (09/12/2007)
DR. GREG GRANT AWARDED TWO GRANTS WORTH $90,218: Dr. Grant received a $35,218 Cottrell College Science Award from the Research Corporation to conduct a systematic investigation of the preparation of molecular square metallosupramolecular complexes formed by transition metal mediated self-assembly. He also secured a three-year, $55,000 grant from the American Chemical Society's Petroleum Research Fund to conduct a similar research project involving two undergraduate students. DEPARTMENT WELCOMES DR. JISOOK KIM: Dr. Jisook Kim joins the department as an assistant professor. Dr. Kim comes to UTC from Tenn Tech and has had postdoctoral fellowships at Minnesota and MIT. DR. WADDELL RETIRES: After 36 years of service to UTC and the Department of Chemistry, Dr. Tom Waddell retired at the end of the Spring semester. DR. SYMES PRESENTS AT LUNAR AND PLANETARY CONFERENCE: Dr. Steven Symes presented a talk and a poster at the Lunar and Planetary Conference hosted by NASA in Houston, Texas, March 14 - 18. DR. GRANT ATTENDS NATIONAL ACS & PRF ANNIVERSARY: Dr. Greg Grant was an invited guest at the National ACS Convention in Philadelphia held August 22 - 25, 2004. He participated in the combined anniversaries (60th and 50th respectively) of the founding of the Petroleum Research Fund and the first grant awards. PRF had asked Dr. Grant to write a brief essay about the impact that the PRF has had on his research program. That along with a picture of a UTC student, Ivan Poullaos, appeared in the booklet that PRF put together for the Program. DR. JANZEN AND DR. MCLEAN JOIN THE CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT: The Department of Chemistry would like to welcome Dr. Daron Janzen and Dr. Howard McLean to the chemistry faculty at UTC. Dr. Janzen, a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota, is the Grote Postdoctoral Fellow for 2004 - 2006. He will teach classes and perform research with Dr. Greg Grant. Dr. Howard McLean is a visiting scientist from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He is participating in the RSEC program and will spend the year teaching and performing research with Dr. Gretchen Potts. (07/26/04)
WESTECH SUMMER STUDENTS VISIT UTC CHEMISTRY COMPUTER LAB: On June 24, 2004, 17 high school students from the WesTech Center attended a CAChe workshop in the Department of Chemistry. They learned how to draw and manipulate molecules. They also learned the structure of penicillin. DR. GEORGE RICHTER-ADDO ADDRESSES THE SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM: Dr. George Richter-Addo, a professor at the University of Oklahoma, spent a day with the Department of Chemistry on Friday, May 14, 2004. He gave a talk entitled "Interactions of NO and Organic Nitroso Compounds with Heme Models" and meet with students to discuss research and graduate school opportunities. CHEMISTRY GRADUATE RECOGNIZED AS UTC DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI: Dr. Randal Weber, a 1975 graduate of the UTC Department of Chemistry, is the 2004 recipient of the UTC Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Weber is the head of the Department of Head and Neck surgery at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Weber was honored at a banquet held at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club on May 7, 2004. CHEMISTRY MAJOR PRESENTS AT THE PITTSBURGH CONFERENCE: Jane Dickerson, a senior BS Chemistry major, presented her research at the Pittsburgh Conference, held March 6 - March 12 in Chicago, IL. Pittcon is a national conference for analytical chemists that is attended by over 25,000 people. Jane participated in a graduate poster session with her poster entitled "The Use of ICP-AES to Student the Feasibility of Native Plants as Biomonitors in the Tennessee River Valley". FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGIST SPEAKS TO CHEMISTRY CLUB: Dr. Arpad Vass, a forensic anthropologist who is a Senior Research Scientist at Oak Ridge Nation Labs, addressed the UTC Community on Wednesday, March 17. With a crowd of over 240 people, Dr. Vass spoke on the science of determining Time of Death as well as locating clandestine graves. The even was sponsored by both the Chemistry Club and SGA. Chemistry Major Wins Public Service Award: Alicia Allen, a BS Chemistry Major with a biochemistry concentration and a premed major, was awarded the Female Public Service Award during half-time of the Homecoming football game on October 4. The award is sponsored by the Alumni Office and Student Development and is awarded to a female and male who are involved in campus and community affairs with an emphasis on campus involvement, displaying distinguished service. Dr. Grant Receives NSF-RUI: Dr. Greg Grant has received a 3 year, $198, 570 grant titled "The Composition of Heavy Metal Ions with Polythioethers and Related Crown Ligands" from NSF-RUI. The grant will support his research as well as a post-doc for 2 years. Congratulations!

Dr. Meyer and Dr. Knight Promoted: Congratulations Dr. Gail Meyer who was promoted to full professor this summer and to Dr. Kyle Knight who was promoted to associate professor and who received tenure.
