DEPARTMENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Every five years an external reviewer from a comparable program evaluates the department. This year Dr. Andrew Methven, Professor and Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Illinois examined extensive documentation of departmental activity and visited the campus February 21-23, 2007, to interview students and faculty and inspect department facilities. Students he interviewed told him that the faculty is accessible, caring, supportive, knowledgeable, and helpful. He noted that the faculty are highly qualified and excel as teachers and scholars who view education as their highest priority. He recognized faculty commitment to research as an important component of professional development, student education, and the curriculum. He commended the productive research programs that have resulted in an extensive list of scientific publications (more than 80) and presentations (more than 120) in the last five years. He also noted that the department is a close-knit community of teachers and students.
