Electronic Resources at UTC
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has a variety of
electronic resources to assist you in successfully performing your
adjunct faculty duties. Listed below are some of the more common
resources but if there is a specific need that you have feel free to
contact the Walker
Teaching Resource Center (425-4188) for help accessing other campus
teaching resources.
UTCOnline (Blackboard)
Our online course delivery system, UTCOnline,
allows you to interact
with your students electronically. Every course taught at UTC has
a UTCOnline
component created and populated with the enrolled students
for that course. While we do not recommend first time faculty
devoting all their time to learning all of UTCOnline's
features, there
are some features that will help you be organized and hopefully
decrease the time it takes you to do the things you want to so with
your students. For example.
- Posting course materials -- By
placing
course materials such as the syllabus inside of UTCOnline,
students
can get to a copy at any time. No more lost syllabi needing to be
replaced.
- Electronic office hours.-- With UTCOnline , you
have ready access to your students email addresses. This allows
you to
send emails with one students or to all students at once. Notice
a
problem on an assignment? Just log into UTCOnline and
fire off an
email to all your students to correct it.. You can also carry on
specific topical discussions with students in the discussion
area. The
beauty of which is that students do not all have to participate at the
same time and all get to see the discussion in order.
- UTCOnline
have a gradebook feature-- This
allows you to post your students grades in a manner that is secure and
convenient for the student. They do not have to spend a lot of
time trying to track you down and you do not have to worry about
students calling you to try and get you to give them their grades
over the phone (which actually violates Federal law to do. Don't give
grades out over the phone). By posting grades in UTCOnline , the
students have access to their grades 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Fell a little intimidated by UTCOnline?
No problem. The
teaching resource center provides training courses in a variety of
aspects of UTCOnline
usage. Click

Mocsnet
Mocsnet is UTC's networking resource that brings together all of the
various electronic services and presents them in a unified place.
It also allows the user to have one username and password to access all
of
these resources. Besides being a portal to other campus
resources, Mocsnet provides the following services directly to faculty,
staff, and students.
- Email - All faculty, staff, and students are required to
use the official University provided email address for university
related correspndence. The system can be accessed using any
modern email program as well as through the web interface accessible
form anywhere you can get an internet connection. Email
accounts are automatically generated when an employee is put into the
human resources computer so please make sure your paperwork is in order
and in. You can usually check and see if you are in the system
yet by trying to look yourself up in UTC's online
directory.
- File storage - Facutly are alloted 200 megabytes of online
storage on a special server that is backed up frequently. This
means that if you put information on our server, it will be copied and
stored in a safe place. Even if the server is completely
destroyed, your data that was present during to lsat backup will be
safe.
- Personal Web Page - Some faculty choose to
communicate with student en masse using a web page. If you choose
to do this instead of using UTCOnline , a
space is provided for
you. Just remember that no identifying student information or
grades can be published on a regular web page. Your web page is
located in your personal file storage area in a subdirectory named
Public_html. Everything you place inside this subdirectory is
visible to everyone on the internet. To have files that are
private to you, make sure to place them anywhere but the Public_html
subdirectory.

They will help you get in touch with someone who can help.
Software Training and Guidance
OK, the Help Desk does not do this. But they can help you get in
touch with the Walker
Teaching Resource Center
(425-4188) who can. While the teaching resource center does help
people figure specific issues with programs, we do not provide basic
level training in using Windows and Microsoft Office programs. We
can however recommend places that do provide this type of low level
training.
