Tennessee SLLA (School Leadership Licensure Exam) Registration and Information here. This exam is required in Tennessee. What do I do to get my license? What do I have to do to keep my license? The following information is effective 8/2007 but is under revision by the State Board of Education. New regulations will be posted as soon as they are officially approved. In Tennessee, once you become a principal (not assistant principal), you have 3 years to advance your "BAL" (Beginning Administrator's License) to a "PAL" (Professional Administrator's License).This process should be started at the beginning of the three years, NOT at the end. It requires that you set annual goals with your supervisor, that those goals are evaluated, and that I serve as a resource/support person to the process. Please contact me during your first year as a principal for more information. What do I need to do to RENEW my BAL? The BAL is issued for 5 years. If, during that time, you have not completed 3 successful years as a principal, you simply have to renew it. See the 'forms' section for links to the appropriate form. What do I need to do to UPGRADE my BAL to a PAL? The process of advancement requires that you have engaged in a 3 year professional development plan with your supervisor, and that you have successfully completed 3 years as a principal or supervisor. Assistant principals cannot upgrade to a PAL. The professional development plan should begin as soon as you begin your principalship. Click here for a sample "Verification of Eligibility Form". Once the three years are completed, and this form has been completed, send it to me. I will review it and then sign the State form and return it to you for your superintendent's signature. Principal's endorsement in GACE assessments in Educational Leadership will be deferred until
June 2008, and the PSC will continue to accept passing Praxis scores for
Educational Leadership assessments administered on or before March 15, 2008
